Houhai is one of the three neighbouring lakes at the centre of Beijing. Houhai means the back sea in English. This area has been bustling since the Qing dynasty, with many shops and residences concentrated here. Playing on the frozen Houhai lake during winter is an “old Beijing” tradition.
